If, as some argue, Clerith is now canon, then this attribute feels like it doesn't really mean anything. The status of canon ship is not (noticeably) drawing any new shippers. It's not lead to a noticeable uptick in fanfiction or fanart. It's not lead to a demonstrably new essay on the pairing. It might make people feel good, but if it is canon then it doesn't matter. Fans are abandoning the ship over time. The amount of fan works is being dwarfed - it should not be unusual to find a new Clerith fic listed on Ao3 or FFN but it is the exception all the same. If it's canon then this status has nothing to do with what people like to ship - they apparently do not care. Each new instalment or new information seems likely to overlook the ship - Dirge of Cerberus (the manual does not count. Seriously) and CC offered nothing. G-bike does not appear to feature Aerith at all.

If, as others argue, Cloti is canon, then this attribute does seem to contribute to popularity. There are new shippers all the time. Zerith is extremely popular and everyone is very emotional over Crisis Core's ending. There's frequent updates to fanfiction and new fanart. There's more essays about the pairing. People feel good it's canon, and it attracts new fans. The fandom grows; maybe not like when FFVII was new, or when AC or even CC came, but it's still in flux. New fans come to the ship. They're swayed by arguments, they produce fan-works. People ship the pairing - and it looks like it's canon; each new game and new information seems to keep confirming the ship. Right up to date there's Tifa in G-bike.

This is a rallying call to Cleriths. Stop the canon fixation. It does not help. Believe it if you wish, but stop bashing Tifa. This is putting people off. Stop bashing Zack too. That really puts newer fans off. Like it or not, the major way fans enter the fandom these days is via AC or CC - neither of which at first glance indicate Clerith. CC gave rise to Zerith as an eternal unending ship (no, I don't like this view or the ships' portrayal in the game or indeed the game but this is beside the point) and implied Cloti. AC is nothing but Cloti - believe what you will about Cloud's last lines, the smile, Aerith's words, whatever the creatives said previously or Cloud seeing Aerith as he does. None of that matters in the slightest. A new person to the fandom is going to watch Aerith walk away from Cloud and Cloud then says he's not alone anymore. They are going to see Tifa sticking by his side and believing in him the entire film. They do not and will not reach the conclusion that Aerith lives on inside Cloud - the visuals and framing simply do not lend themselves to this conclusion.

Okay; change of plan. I have now removed Cloud's half of Wutai and Aeris's half of Gold Saucer visit 2. Cloud's half of Wutai felt like it was just stalling for time, or that Cloud needed something to do, and I was hitting a dead end with how he would act since his attitude to the whole relationship has been pretty consistent; move things forward but not daring to. Aeris's chapter of Enchantment Night has been repurposed into Cloud's since his half of chapter 13 was originally a slightly more involved version of the play and the important bit is the gondola ride. Not sure if it does work split up like this for the final moments...

I made the few alterations of the Cosmo Canyon lines below, but that mostly got left alone and onto the new chapter. Which I am very torn over; basically Cloud's half feels pretty superfluous (except for a moment he considers what Shinra has done to each party member) and I kind of want to drop it in favour of just the second of the two Aeris sections. The first was written first and is a new sex scene, but then I thought about how the focus has been shifting towards more about the relationship and wound up writing the second version which is after they've slept together in Wutai. I did wonder about merging them, but I'm not sure if the second one works better as is?

I got very torn on Costa del Sol and the following Gold Saucer chapter. Originally I was going to write the Gold Saucer three different ways, but the last option (Aeris avoiding Cloud) really wasn't working so I dropped that one and concentrated on the other two. Of them, I think maintaing their agreement works better, but I'd love a second opinion. Gongaga is mostly the same with some clean-up/extensions/amendments.

Also; I have first versions of Cosmo Canyon and Nibelheim, but I'm going to hold off posting those for now as I want to get to the end of the fic at least this year and then worry about fixing it up later.

(also sudden fear of whether I do enough showing and too much telling)

I've made a load more general amendments to this chapter (especially things like the start of Cloud's section that has been bugging me for a while, but I think I've got reading more nicely). Cloud's reaction to Aeris's question is now focussed on its relation to Hojo, and I fixed some POV drifts on the beach as well. Aeris's section is mostly a re-arrangement of events; Cloud's new answer comes after the sex, but in addition Aeris's reaction to it has been completely reworked.

Final Fantasy VII Fanfic: An Obvious Attraction

Kind of a ficlet; this grew out of a little imagined scene for a post-Advent Children/Dirge of Cerberus scenario where Reeve and Aeris wind up together. This actually resulted from a long discussion with raaj on how the sequence in which a Cloud/Aeris/Tifa relationship formed up strongly affected the longevity/happiness of the participants.

Anyway; Aeris is alive somehow and doing a bit of work for the WRO, which necessitates meetings with Reeve...
